                                                   NEVER GIVE UP
I want to talk about Stephen William Hawking who is a famous physicist and cosmologist.
He was born on 8 January in 1942. He saw interested in science. He was a social guy and he didn’t have to study all the time. He, most of the time, grasped the essential of the subjects. He graduated from Oxford in 1962 with a first class honor in physics. Then he started to study postgraduate in Cambridge University.
Cambridge had a great effect to his life. He started to study cosmology that he will focus on in the future. And there, he was diagnosed with a disease called ALS which affects motor neurons. As day passed he became unable to move, eat by himself, sit and speak. But he never gave up. He kept studying and made remarkable researches. He always thinks that there is someone who is in a worse condition than him.
After he got his doctrine degree in 1966, he began to make researches and teach, which has lasted till now. He made researches on black holes and found many things.  He worked on Penrose and Einstein’s theories and he found that origin of our universe comes from a singularity. He made researches to prove big bang. In the 1980s Hawking answered one of Einstein's unanswered theories, the famous unified field theory.
He has written many books about his researches and theories. The books have been translated into many languages. His first book called A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes was sold over a million copies and was listed as the best selling nonfiction book. He became a fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1974 and five years later was named to a professorial chair at Cambridge University. By the end of the twentieth century Stephen Hawking became one of the best known scientists in the world. His popularity includes endorsing a wireless Internet connection and speaking to wheelchair bound youth. When asked about his objectives, Hawking told in an interview "My goal is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all."

SKIING BECAME A DISASTER (Group Assignment-Bengi)

                           SKIING BECAME A DISASTER

Everything was wonderful. We planned to have an exciting weekend with our friends in Himalaya. However, we all weren`t aware of the miserable things waiting for us the next day. If we had known what was coming next, we wouldn`t have had so great expectations.

The day went on as it was planned. We prepared everything especially our ski-equipment. We met immediately with our friends at the same cafe as usually. We talked about things we have done the year before and had fun. Helen looked at her watch and warned us to get ready. The bus would arrive in 15 minutes. The conversation was so deep that we hadn`t realized the time passing.

Everybody was laughing and acting like primary school children. Meanwhile, I was looking out of the window and began to dream… The bright, blue sky was smiling to me, which symbolized to me that our holiday would be amazing. The mountains covered with snow captivated me. Suddenly a piece of paper awoke me. Jack asked me loudly: ” Won`t you join us? ”I refused to answer him and threw the piece of paper back and joined them.

After we arrived at the hotel, we left our bags and went out with our equipment. The guide warned us to be in groups at least of four and to use the minimum voice while talking. We decided to walk to peak. The weather was cold and gloomy. It made us feel stranger. Promptly, Elizabeth heard the wolf`s noises and screamed. We heard the echo of her scream several times. The ground began to shake and I felt like everything was going to collapse. Intentionally we crouched down, but unfortunately Jack lost his balance and trundled. While we were trying to catch Jack, a horrible noise was coming closer to us. It seemed like the sky was shouting to us. The sliding and approaching of the snow took only a few seconds.

When I opened my eyes, I felt something heavy on me. It was real dark but I was able to realize the snow laying over my body. As soon as I understood that it was an avalanche, I tried to stand up and find my friends immediately. I heard the voice of Helen`s crying. I told her to be quite lest there could be another avalanche. After calming her down, I looked around and the all the snow around us was smooth as if nothing had happened. We found the glove of Jack while looking for the others. We ran towards it and started to dig around the place the glove was laying. Actually he was laying there. I saw his hand, which was almost frozen. We got him out of there with hard work. As the guide told us before, we rubbed his body with snow. Slowly he regained consciousness, but he trembled. Helen stayed with him and I looked for Elizabeth. But there was no help, I couldn`t find her. So I called the emergency  to help us. They arrived within half an hour. The emergency team asked us whether Elizabeth had a cell phone with her. Fortunately she had it and the emergency team could find her with the help of the cell phone`s signal. At the time we found her, she was almost frozen and the emergency took us immediately back to the hotel.

In the evening we realized what a big disaster we had. Luckily no one died. We were all happy to be alive. Maybe it was a lesson to us and we learned that a very little mistake could cause big troubles. I don`t think that we will be psychological able to ski in the next few years. Even today, I have nightmares about that incident and cannot forget it.

Nonconventional Medicine / (Bengi)

                   NONCONVENTIONAL MEDICINE IS ACCEPTABLE?
For years you have heard about nonconventional medicines. And you have put them into practice. You have heard something and practiced it or you have gone to doctor whenever you get sick. Once you get sick you hear many recommends from people around you. They give advice to you and they expect you to practice it. Everyone thinks their treatments are the best. Have you thought how much you have done the right or what beneficial they have?
Let me give you two examples. I read two stories days ago. On the first one there was a girl who saw diabetic. Her parents were Christian Scientist. They didn’t take their daughter to a doctor and waited … They had prayed for days and done nothing to that little girl. As you can guess the girl died. Now … Who is responsible for this tragic story? Believing non-conventional, spiritual things and thoughts caused a little girl’s death. In the other story the guy had been diagnosed with a disease that would cause his death according to the doctors. But the guy didn’t give up. He used medicines. Additional to those medicines he treated himself only by laughing. Finally he got over his disease and backed to normal. If that Christian Scientist parents had taken their daughter to a doctor and then prayed probably that girl would have lived much longer. If that guy had given up and done nothing for himself he would have died earlier. Because feeling happy and using medicines both help us to get over our disease.
I’ll tell you about another nonconventional treatment .There is a Chinese non-conventional treatment called acupuncture. Many of you must have heard about it. That treatment treats many diseases so many people rely on that. The people who is happy with that treatment think probably ‘’nonconventional treatments are so good for our health’’. But that treatment can’t find a cure for cancer or diabetes. Such things should be cured with the help of medicines. But you shouldn’t use herbal medicine, for instance while taking chemotherapy drugs, because they may react in the opposite way and you may get worse. Treatments like acupuncture may be used to treat less dangerous diseases and for the disease which the treatments affect.
You should care the disease you have. If you have cold which lasts for many days, you have to see a doctor. Many diseases have symptoms that we can’t guess. Seeing a doctor gives us an idea about our disease. We take our medicines and then if it doesn’t affect our health we use nonconventional medicines. While trying to get over the disease we should use a nonconventional medicine called ‘’feeling happy’’. As long as we don’t feel desperate we’ll get over it less painful.
I firmly believe that nonconventional medicines are not always approval or useful. We can’t be healthy and get over all the disease just using that medicine. We should rely on modern medicine and not abandon ourselves to despair. If it’s necessary for you to use nonconventional medicine, go for it. But don’t forget to take your ‘real’ medicine.

Angela's Ashes&Miracle Workers (Bengi)

                            TWO NICE MOVIES ARE COMPETING
I’ll say something about the nice movies I watched.
Firstly I have to say that I like Angela's Ashes. There’re more impressive scenes than the other film has. I like its dramatic scenes. Frank's struggle with poor life, his father's addiction to alcohol, death of Frank’s brothers... But people in his family still try to live, try to survive... He always stood there as if he had been a family guy. After those struggles he became a great author and a great teacher. He got the reward of his struggles.
When it comes to Miracle Worker, the thing they did was a miracle. But while I was watching it, I remembered a movie called ‘‘Black’’. I watched it a year ago. I guess it's so similar to Miracle Worker. I presumed what could happen in that movie while watching. So, it was not a miracle to me. But if I hadn't watched Black I'd think it was so impressive. The work they did was not easy. Sullivan was like Helen and she never gave up. She helped people who were deaf and blind. She never gave up while teaching Helen and gave the idea of ''You're like other people. You don't have any obstacles in your life’’. She did that because Helen's family treated her as if she were ''different''. So it was miracle for them.
To summarize it, both movies have a similar theme. They both mention about surviving in a wild world. Both people, Helen and Frank, got what they want after all those surviving effort. And both movies handled with the theme very nice. They show us that ‘’Never give up until you reach your aim’’.
